About Permanent Mission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations
The Permanent Mission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations has been working since its accession to the United Nations on December 14, 1955, to highlight the vital role that the Kingdom plays on the regional and international arenas in promoting multilateral action and in maintaining international peace and security. The Kingdom’s election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council three times during the periods (1965-1966), (1982-1983) and (2014-2015) reflects Jordan’s position and leadership, the international community’s confidence in the moderate approach pursued by Jordanian foreign policy, and the Kingdom’s firm belief in the necessity of commitment The Charter of the United Nations and international law as a way to regulate international relations and resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means.
In the midst of the successive events that have occurred in the Middle East region since the Kingdom joined the United Nations, the Permanent Mission has worked, and still is, to keep the Palestinian cause active on the international scene, in coordination with the Palestinian brothers and the Arab and Islamic groups in New York, and drawing the attention of the whole world to the suffering of the people The brotherly Palestinian, in defense of his rights, foremost of which is his right to self-determination and to meet his legitimate aspirations to establish his independent, sovereign state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The permanent mission seeks, through engaging with the various United Nations organs, especially the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the United Nations General Secretariat and the specialized agencies subsidiaries of those organs, to defend the Kingdom’s interests and priorities in various fields, including but not limited to: Refugees, Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Youth, Disarmament, Sustainable Development, Poverty Eradication, Empowerment of Women and Girls, Child Protection, Interfaith Coexistence, Human Rights, Rule of Law, Climate Change, Environmental Protection and Biodiversity peacekeeping operations, countering terrorism and violent extremism.
It should be noted that the Kingdom was elected as Vice-President of the General Assembly at its seventy-fifth session. The Kingdom is also a member of a number of groups of friends on a number of important issues, such as: the group of friends of women, peace and security, the group of friends of children, security and peace, the group of friends of journalists, the group of friends of preventing violent extremism, the group of friends against terrorism, the group of friends of youth, the group of friends of children and goals Sustainable Development, the Group of Friends of Climate Change, and the Group of Friends of Persons with Disabilities. The importance of membership in these groups is that it enhances international action in these areas, and enables initiatives on these important international issues.
